ビリー・ジョーがこの曲を書いたのは恋人がエクアドルに引っ越すことになったときとのこと。でも、ただの失恋ソングではなく、大切な人と離れ離れになったときの”人生”を綴った歌詞という解釈をしました。

「dead skin on trial」は直訳すると「試される死んだ肌」といった感じですが、いまいちぴんとこなかったため「別れたあとで見る思い出のタトゥーほど辛いものはない」といった解釈で「古い傷跡」と訳しました。

「だから写真を撮って / 思い出を心に焼き付るんだ / そしてそれを壁にかけるんだ / 穏やかで幸せな時間に」は「穏やかで幸せな時間に心を整理する」といった解釈をしました。
